What is it? Circumcision is the removal of a simple fold of skin (foreskin) that covers the head (glans) of the un-erect penis.
Why do it? Circumcision has a number or proven medical benefits with many related to the ease of maintaining adequate penile hygiene. It is much easier to keep clean after the circumcision and throughout life. The benefits include a reduction in urinary tract infection by 10 fold throughout life, a decrease in penile and foreskin (removed) infections, avoidance of potential requirement for an older boy to undergo circumcision due to recurrent infections or phimosis, decrease in HIV (60%), herpes, syphilis and chlamydia (commonest STD in Australia), prevention of cancer of the penis and a significant decrease in cervical cancer secondary to less Human Papilloma Virus transmission. There may also be religious, cultural and social reasons to circumcise your baby boy.
Method and Analgesia Dr Luke uses the Plastibell which was developed by Hollister Inc in the USA in 1950. The Plastibell, having been placed correctly over the head of the penis, determines the amount of skin removed. Thus it should produce a good result, taking enough and leaving enough skin. The procedure takes about 10 minutes. EMLA cream applied 2 hours before the procedure has been proven (Dr Russell, Brisbane) to decrease pain and crying during the procedure and for 4 hours afterwards. Some babies require paracetamol post circumcision.
